Rory Schmeir
Manager - Hotter Ranch / Owner - Masterpiece Home Improvement
Rory Schmeir, born in 1969 in Durango, Colorado, began his professional life soon after completing high school. His first job was as a farm hand, where he worked until he was 23. Seeking broader horizons, he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where he spent a year mastering the craft of masonry. This experience, however, was just a stepping stone in his diverse career journey.
He soon returned to his roots in Monte Vista, Colorado, where he embarked on a new entrepreneurial venture with his father. Together, they opened Chief Liquor, a store 15 miles from Monte Vista. Rory and his father managed the store successfully for five years before selling it. This initial foray into business ownership instilled in him a robust management and customer service foundation, skills he would carry forward in his future endeavors.
Transition to Construction and Custom Home Building
With a solid background in entrepreneurship, Rory was prepared for his next challenge. He founded Masterpiece Home Improvement and Crown Construction. Over the next two decades, he devoted himself to building and remodeling custom homes. His self-taught expertise and a profound commitment to quality set him apart in the home building industry. His companies quickly gained a reputation for creating some of the most visually striking and well-constructed homes in the San Luis Valley and beyond.
Mastering the Craft of Homebuilding
Rory's comprehensive understanding of building science has been crucial in making dream homes a tangible reality for many. He is well-versed in construction nuances, including using specific materials and methods, compliance with building codes, and safety standards. His collaboration with architects and engineers ensures that each home is aesthetically pleasing and structurally sound.
His meticulous attention to detail extends to project management, where he excels in orchestrating the logistics of new builds and renovations. From managing timelines and coordinating with subcontractors to navigating unexpected challenges like supply chain issues or inclement weather, Rory's proactive approach keeps projects moving smoothly and efficiently.
Client-Centric Approach in Construction
Rory believes that understanding and fulfilling client needs is paramount. He invests time in getting to know the homeowners' preferences and visions, which allows him to deliver personalized results that reflect each client's unique style and functional needs. His forward-thinking approach includes staying updated on the latest trends in design, technology, and sustainable building practices, which he adeptly integrates into his projects to enhance their value and appeal.
Roots and Community Engagement
In 2012, Rory returned to where it all began—Durango, Colorado. Here, he built his own home and continued to serve the community by constructing other custom homes. His commitment to his community extends beyond building homes; he actively participates in local service initiatives. He volunteers his time and skills to help older people with necessary home repairs and maintenance, reinforcing his role as a community pillar.
Managing Hotter Ranch
After establishing his home in Durango, Rory assumed the role of General Manager at Hotter Ranch, a family-operated hay ranch that has been in his family for generations. As the manager, he oversees all aspects of the ranch, from crop production and livestock management to maintaining ranch equipment and properties. His management skills ensure the ranch operates efficiently and continues to thrive under his stewardship.
Personal Life and Interests
Rory's personal life is deeply connected to the landscapes and community of Colorado. His father, Fred, passed away in 2013, and since then, his mother has retired and now divides her time between Monte Vista and Durango. He enjoys a close-knit relationship with his family, including his two sisters, who are also engaged in significant professional endeavors within the state.
An avid outdoorsman, Rory finds solace and rejuvenation in nature. His hobbies include riding dirt bikes, boating, water skiing, and camping. These activities provide him with relaxation and connect him to the natural environment he works hard to preserve and enhance.
Rory Schmeir's career is a testament to his versatility, skill, and dedication to his craft and community. From building bespoke homes to managing a significant agricultural operation, he has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to excellence and community service, making him a respected and valued member of the Durango area.
